Emotional Regulation

This Is for You If Your Emotions Feel Intense, Fast, and Hard to Control

Woman trying to control her emotions

Living with emotional dysregulation is disorienting. You might feel out of control in moments that others seem to move through easily, or completely detached when you want to feel connected.

What is the Root Cause of Emotional Dysregulation?

Emotional dysregulation develops at the intersection of neurology, early experience, and environment. These factors shape how the brain learns to process and respond to stress, often in ways that made complete sense at the time but create real difficulty in adult life.

There are four primary contributors:

Neurological and biological differences

When the brain’s emotional and logical centers don’t communicate effectively, emotions don’t arrive as manageable waves. They surge, spike, or disappear entirely.

Early childhood trauma and neglect

Chronic stress or neglect during formative years wires the nervous system to stay on high alert, making even ordinary situations feel genuinely overwhelming.

Chronic invalidation

Growing up where feelings were dismissed or punished teaches the brain that emotions are dangerous, preventing the development of the very skills needed to regulate them.

Underlying neurodivergence conditions

Dysregulation is frequently a core feature of conditions like ADHD, Autism Spectrum Disorder, Borderline Personality Disorder, and PTSD rather than a separate issue alongside them.

How Therapy Helps You Calm Your Emotions

Using DBT-informed skills alongside trauma-responsive and insight-based approaches, I work on helping you understand your emotional patterns, where they come from, what triggers them, and how to move through them without being ruled by them or running from them.

This isn’t about becoming emotionally flat or learning to suppress what you feel. It’s about building the capacity to feel fully without losing yourself in the process.

Clients doing this work often describe feeling more grounded, more trusting of themselves in difficult moments, and more able to stay present in their relationships without the fear of what they might say or do when emotions run high. You don’t have to keep white-knuckling your way through your own feelings.
